A Modern Dino Party
Fit for my little guy
What an exciting and scary moment! Our little guy just turned ONE! While there are so many amazing moments that have taken place, it’s a little nerve-racking to know that this tiny human we created will soon be walking on his own, starting to say new words, and will begin to come into his own. It’s a little bitter sweet for this momma over here, but such a blessing to have already raised such a sweet (SUPER SWEET), lovable, silly, inquisitive, smart, little man.
I will admit, and those who have followed me on Facebook and instagram already know, that I almost ran out of time planning his party. With so much going on lately, I looked at my calendar to find that I had about 1.5 – 2 months before his party, before I even started thinking about what I was going to do for him. I had Pinterest boards loaded up with ideas, but couldn’t nail down his theme, until I found these adorable little moccasins from Freshly Picked (Find them HERE). We saw the designer on Shark Tank a while back and I fell in love with them. A re-run happen to be on T.V. right before I started planning Liam’s party and that pretty much started my addiction to the Dino theme.
With only about a month away, I was up to my neck with creating all of his decorations, because you know, that’s what I do. I did have to step back and let things just be, as I was going crazy trying to make everything perfect on such a short time frame. Over all, his party decorations turned out adorable, and the love that was filled on that day was all that we really needed.
I designed and created the invites, as well as the matching address labels, all in Silhouette Design Studio. I added my own touch to a couple different designs, like the number ones on the front and the “Boogiesaurus” on the back. These invites really came out great, especially with the added silver vinyl party hats.
My husband had suggested we hold the party at my parents new house, which actually turned out great. Not only was the drive up to their house a perfect setting for “Dino Watching,” but the natural light that filled the house made for the perfect backdrop for the fun colors!
My mom helped me out by making these black and yellow signs that my dad placed on the drive way leading up to their house. This was such a cute idea, and with all the trees, ponds, and dirt road, it really helped create a Jurassic feeling as you were driving up the road.
I did joke about posting their information on here if anyone wanted to rent out their house for events! But seriously, is this not an amazing driveway?!
I set the color theme as Blue (both dark and light), Green (dark and light), Orange, and a pop of Silver. I thought having a color theme, would help keep the decorations uniformed. I much prefer a modern approach to parties, but we all know this First birthday is really all about what I want. LOL! I realize that once he starts talking and having an opinion, his parties will be centered around what he wants. So, I took it, and ran with it!
I loved that my parents have a fireplace mantel, I mean, who doesn’t want to decorate one? I picked up these wooden letters, literally at the last moment, and painted them white with some left over house paint. I spent a good amount of time cutting and assembling the leaves (find them HERE in the Silhouette Design Store). I added small embellishments to the center, just to give a finished look.
The banner design can also be found HERE. I did end up making my own tassels out of silver streamer paper. Then, I cut out some large leaves from 12″ x 12″ paper, spray painted the dino’s, and gave them small party hats out of construction paper. I love the way it all came together.
The morning that we were leaving to head to my parents, I decided I was going to bring his high chair, which of course meant it too needed a banner! So, at 9:00am, a few hours before we had to leave, I was in my office making more tassels and another banner. I took the same triangle and font from the larger banner, and then cut different dino shapes out and sewed them together using my handheld sewing machine (find one HERE). That tiny sewing machine will end up being my best friend!
My original idea was to purchase the letters R,A,W,R in the large mylar balloons, but unfortunately, they didn’t have all the letters available. So, the number was the next best thing. Grab some mylar balloons HERE, they really liven up the party and will make your guest think you’re a legit party planner.
A few weeks ago, I ordered the Silhouette Chalkboard Starter Kit (find it HERE) and was so excited to try it out. Of course, me being me, I “tried it out” but creating the layout you see below. I used the chalk that comes with the starter kit, and the final project came out pretty cool, but for me, it was just missing something. Something like color. So, I did some research and found that you can insert gel pens into the Curio pen holder. Now, yes, I have the Silhouette pens, but the colors just weren’t right for the party. I bought some regular gel pens (grab THESE) and they worked great! I still have some learning to do about how to fill in the fonts, but for my first try, I think it came out great! I found a frame for under $5.00 at Walmart, and it made the perfect Chalkboard Birthday Sign!
If you haven’t noticed, these little dino guys were scattered everywhere! I used regular spray paint and added a layer of sealer.
I found these great palm leaf plates at Jo Ann Fabrics that were luckily on sale. They worked well with the theme and colors. I created my own stickers, that matched the invites, to place on the drinking cups, and my mom made matching water bottle labels. These matching straws were found in Target’s $3.00 bin; total score!
Then there’s the cake. I had pinned so many cakes and was getting so overwhelmed by all the Dino designs. I found one very similar, without the decorative boarders, that I wanted to emulate. I figured I should keep the cake simple and modern. I also created a matching cake topper using the same font as the banners and invites. I love the way it all came together. This cake was created by Bayberry’s Bakery and More in Lake Placid, Fl.
And then there’s the custom, handmade, birthday bib and shirt! I had to, of course. I love having those extra little touches that make other’s smile as well. I used the printable heat transfer material (find it HERE), and then used fabric ink to make his “Boogiesaurus” shirt.
Needless to say, I’m thrilled with everything, especially with my time crunch to get it all done. Our little guy had such a great time playing in the water, eating his cake, and being loved on by all his family. I truly couldn’t have asked for a better first birthday for our little guy.
I can’t wait to create another magical celebration for all his future birthdays!
Here’s just a little look at the smash cake photo session we had before his birthday! The cake came out perfect, simple, and just how I wanted it! The photos all came out way too cute, but then again did I think they weren’t ?!
